Here is the driver ready to have the face altered with more loft to make it more fun to play with.

It's original face loft is only

6 degrees !

When working with the old clubs you just have to go at it and not worry.

To start the process, I've begun to file away at the face top line at the desired angle of about

20 degrees.

Continued filing at the same angle keeping it even to the existing face.

More filing and the angle is moving down the face towards the sole of the club.

I'm beginning to give the face a little bulge and roll to it.

Almost to the bottom now, I've changed from the roughing file to a bit finer file.

The full face is now altered. Along the way I used my file to curve the face a little so it is not just a straight face looking down at it.

This is called bulge and roll, and makes it easier to hit straight.

The file work is finished and looking down at the club it should look like it will be easier to hit from the tee and in the fairway...

I'll roughen up the face, or cut face lines in it, then the head gets a few thin coats of shellac.

The Play Hickory woods in the rental sets are optimized for playability and your enjoyment. Below, is shown how I add loft to an all but unhittable old driver that started out at 6 degrees of loft. That would be alright for hitting a 10 foot high screamer down a St Andrews fairway, but not much fun for the novice hickory golfer trying to enjoy the hickory experience here in the U.S. on a plush home course.

This is an example of how much work is put into the clubs for your enjoyment...we also add weight when necessary, whip the necks with waxed thread, and install new leather grips.
