The Putters

A typical putter will be a “blade” style putter. Simple and functional. The putters have great “feel” as they are made of forged steel.

The Irons

The typical iron head is forged steel of “blade” design. Here is a Mashie. Each set will have a Niblick, Mashie Niblick, Mashie and Mid-Iron. The faces of the irons will have many different patterns, even smooth.

The Woods

Here is a typical, freshly restored wood. Each club is freshened up but not refinished to much. Most lofts are adjusted to about 15 deg. This makes a versatile tee and fairway club for your enjoyment!

A typical wood head has a lead back weight and many have brass sole plates. Sometimes I will fine tune the “feel” of the club by adding more lead to the club. This is an important aspect of the playability and your enjoyment!

British Heritage |
 |
Most of the authentic, old clubs in the Play Hickory play sets are British made. That is, they were made in Scotland or England by the experienced clubmakers of the time that had learned their trade from the makers of more ancient clubs. Many times the art was passed down the family through the generations. It was said, that anyone could make a golf club that looked right, but the art of being balanced and playing well came from time tested experienced. This is what the British clubmakers had over and above the early Americans (who went on to modernize and produce many inexpensive clubs in mass production). You are truly holding works of art in your hands when you are playing with these old clubs! For years, these clubs have been stored or displayed, protected from damage. Now, the spirits are alive with your swinging and striking the golf ball with these old implements. |

The Club Sets
Seriously, I have sorted through thousands of clubs to pick out the clubs for the play sets. I use a swing weight scale on the irons to assure they have the weight required to feel right and play well. I test the wooden shafts to assure they have the correct flex and strength and are sound for play. And, the work I’ve done to the woods is essential to good play. You have absolutely the BEST chance to enjoy hickory golf when you rent clubs for Play Hickory!
