The sincere hickory player has always battled the issue of “non-authentic ball” in pursuit of
the authentic hickory golf experience. Most golf balls from the hickory era are too valuable to
hit, and if they are hit, their playing characteristics range from “unpredictable” to “terrible.”
Playing the 1.62 ball, fresh out of the cellophane wrapper, is a lot of fun, but these balls
really have little to do with the hickory era. Play Hickory and Chris McIntyre have solved the
hickory purist's problem, by applying an authentic golf ball mold from the hickory era, and
turning out a ball that reflects beautifully on the golf ball that was in use more than 80 years
ago. To tee up a Flash, a Regal or a PGA, with striking mesh patterns is a rich optical
experience. The combination of early 20 th Century hickory golf clubs, an old golf bag,
proper plus-fours, a tie and a Play Hickory golf ball is hard to beat.
